Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve

About Selous Game Reserve
Size: 29,816 sq km (11,512 sq miles).
Location: Southeast Tanzania, 450 km (285 miles) southwest of Dar es Salaam

The world's largest game reserve - 4 times the size of the Serengeti. It is located in the Rufiji River basin and includes grasslands and forests. There are many elephants, lions, zebras, and other wildlife in the reserve. It possesses a diverse landscape from hot volcanic springs, sporadic lakes, channels from the Great Rhaha and Rufiji rivers. Walking is permitted (with an armed ranger) which with over 350 species of bird and 2,000 species of plants to see makes this the most heavenly sanctuary to explore.

Boating Safaris at the Selous Game Reserve

Selous is famous for its elephant, hippopotamus and rhino (although now few remain). The park has a broad range of game: buffalo - the largest population in Africa; Nyasaland gnu; brindled gnu; hartebeest; Greater Kudu; sable antelope; eland; reedbuck; bushbuck; waterbuck; warthog; zebras; giraffe; and wildebeest. Also: lion, leopard, the spotted hyeana and hunting dog are in abundance; cheetah are rare; there are over 350 species of bird and reptiles such as crocodiles and various snakes and lizards. A pair of fish eagles guards the gentle bay, their distinctive black, white and chestnut feather pattern gleaming boldly in the morning sun. Suddenly, the birds toss back their heads in a piercing, evocative duet. On the sandbank below, a well-fed monster of a crocodile snaps to life, startled from its nap. It stampedes through the crunchy undergrowth, crashing into the water in front of the boat, invisible except for a pair of sentry-post eyes that peek menacingly above the surface to monitor our movements.
