Overview
Ruaha River Lodge is the oldest lodge in Ruaha National Park run by a family that has been visiting the area for the last 40 years. The lodge is set on the mighty Great Ruaha River and has probably the best location of all lodges in the park. The scenery is stunning, the rapids over which the lodge looks always have game thursting for water and the nearby pools are filled with crocodiles and hippos. You hardly need to go on safari as a constant procession of wildlife passes the bandas throughout the day and night. The river bank is surrounded by rocky outcrops and it is on and around these that the lodge is built.
Accommodation
• There are 36 stone cottages in all but split into two areas between drive in and fly in guests. It is a large lodge but amazingly you don’t feel like it is crowded.
•
The spacious cottages are made of stone and thatch, all with a large sitting areas with plenty of comfy seats.
• The ensuite bathrooms are large with flush toilets, hot water and electricity next to a private veranda overlooking the river.
Facilities
• The lodge is split in to two distinct camps; each with their own facilities and dining areas; there is a new camp (ten bandas) and the old, original camp (eight bungalows), and although this seems large, each individual camp feels small and personal.
• Each separate camp has a different dining area, one set down near the river, the other built up in the kopjes overlooking the river.
Activities
• Walking safaris are possible but the main focus is on open-sided game drives, usually accompanied by a guide and tracker from the local community.
Dining
• Meals are served on the river bank or high on a rocky outcrop, the food is wholesome and plentiful with fresh veg provided by the family farm in Iringa.
