About Kilimanjaro |
"As wide as all the world, great, high and unbelievably white in the sun was the square top of Kilimanjaro” wrote Ernest Hemingway, the great american writer. Rising abruptly from the open plains, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa rising to 5,895 metres (19,344 feet) above sea level. One of the world’s highest free standing mountains, Mt. Kilimanjaro is composed of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo 5895 m (19344 ft.), Mawenzi 5149 m (16896 ft.), and Shira 3962 m (13000 ft.). It is one of Africa's classic images. Kilimanjaro is the highest walkable summit in the world. The diameter of its base is an incredible 40 miles. Situated near the town of Moshi in Northern Tanzania, the mountain rises from the dry plains, through a wide belt of forest and high alpine heath to an almost bare desert and finally the snow capped summit, Uhuru Peak, just 3 degrees south of the Equator. Kilimanjaro is a dormant, but not an extinct volcano. Ominous rumbles can sometimes be heard- and gases emerge from the fume holes in the crater. Although just three degrees south of the Equator, the peaks of both Kibo and Mawenzi have permanent caps of snow and ice. During their time on the mountain, climbers pass from tropical to arctic environments in just a few days. The various trails first pass through lush rainforests before reaching open moorland where giant lobelia and huge, cactus- like groundsel, grow. Above this moorland is the almost lunar landscape of an alpine desert, which stretches between the two peaks of Kibo, the flat-topped dome at the center, and Mawenzi, a group of jagged points and pinnacles on the eastern side. As Inhospitable as this ‘moonscape' may seem, animals such as herds of eland thrive here.

Kibo, the highest point in Africa, where Uhuru Peak lies, has spectacular hanging glaciers and stupendous views of the African plains some 20,000 feet below. Also on Kibo is the slightly lower peak of Gillman's Point. Summiting one or both of the peaks is the goal for most trekkers. The peaks of Mawenzi are for experienced mountaineers only. With the help of porters and a guide, it is possible to walk all the way to the summit without using specialized mountaineering equipment or having any experience. Thus Kilimanjaro can be conquered by any reasonably fit person. Amani Tours promotes only three routes including Marangu, the easiest climb and therefore the most popular, Machame and the Shira routes. The total climb normally takes 5 to 7days and involves 5 or 6 overnight stays in comfortable mountain huts or in tented camps. Fees, payable in US dollars, include park entrance and accommodation for climbers, food, guides and porters. Climbing equipment can be hired from Amani Tours at reasonable prices. Many thousands of trekkers reach Gillman's point or Uhuru Peak successfully each year without any real difficulty. To avoid altitude sickness and failure, it is important to climatize yourself by ascending slowly and steadily. It is best to plan a stay in Arusha, Moshi or Marangu a day before the start of the climb for acclimatization. Kilimanjaro can be climbed at any time of the year but the best times are considered to be from August to October and January to March. The rainforest is wet during the rains in April, May and June. November through to February are the warmest months.

It is not necessary to be a climber to enjoy a visit to the stunning Mount Kilimanjaro region. Visitors can ascend about 12,000 feet to the Shira Plateau of West Kilimanjaro by using a four-wheel drive vehicle! Tours, which pass through beautiful countryside on the way to the plateau, can be arranged. The climate at this altitude is conducive to gentle walks through flowering vegetation and small human settlements. Walkers will be entranced by the birdlife, with its vivid plumage, which can be seen all around them. If you head for the rainforest, which encircles the mountain, you will find yourself in a world of enchantment and mystery. Monkeys, birds and antelope are abundant. Elephants and buffalo range through the forest and sometimes even leopards can occasionally be seen. The rainforest ensures the fertility of the lush, lower-lying ‘Shamba' country, where the Chagga people cultivate their coffee, maize and banana crops. A stroll through the plantations will provide a fascinating insight into the lives of the local population. You may visit local blacksmiths, fruit and vegitable market, and waterfalls and rivers nearby.
