Kibo, the highest point in Africa, where Uhuru Peak lies, has spectacular hanging glaciers and stupendous views of the African plains some 20,000 feet below. Also on Kibo is the slightly lower peak of Gillman's Point. Summiting one or both of the peaks is the goal for most trekkers. The peaks of Mawenzi are for experienced mountaineers only. With the help of porters and a guide, it is possible to walk all the way to the summit without using specialized mountaineering equipment or having any experience. Thus can be conquered by any reasonably fit person. Amani Tours promotes only three routes including Marangu, the easiest climb and therefore the most popular, Machame and the Shira routes. The total climb normally takes 5 to 7days and involves 5 or 6 overnight stays in comfortable mountain huts or in tented camps. Kilimanjaro can be climbed at any time of the year but the best times are considered to be from August to October and January to March. The rainforest is wet during the rains in April, May and June.
